Around Town
Visitors to the charming township of Jerilderie can expect a delightful experience of heritage walks, tree-lined streets, and the cleanest toilets in New South Wales. Founded in 1859, our town is situated along the banks of Billabong Creek, which is renowned as Australia's, and possibly the world's, longest creek, stretching 321 kilometers through quintessentially Australian landscapes.
Jerilderie is steeped in history and is famous for being the childhood home of Australia's most celebrated military strategist, Sir John Monash. The town's main street features Sir John Monash's beautifully preserved private home, where visitors can immerse themselves in history and browse vintage shops and collectibles.
The town's history is not complete without mentioning the notorious Ned Kelly Gang, who visited in 1879. During their stay, the gang held the town's prominent citizens hostage in the local hotel while Ned wrote his manifesto, The Jerilderie Letter. Visitors can still view the Kelly bank vault on display at the Royal Mail Hotel. A walk through the heritage precinct provides a glimpse into the outlaw's story, while the Powell St heritage precinct is an excellent place for a leisurely stroll. For a more serene experience, visitors can take a relaxing walk along the banks of Billabong Creek or take in the beauty of Lake Jerilderie.
There is much to enjoy in our lovely little town.
